Signet Packaging – Building a High-Performance People System
Suzie Young and Rufaro Mtuwa share how Signet used customer journey mapping and Agile to align their people, accelerate execution, and drive sustainable growth.
“Getting all stakeholders aligned early gave us clarity on where to focus and how to move forward as a business.”
Overview
Signet is a leading Australian packaging company with over 60 years of history and a strong culture built on respect for customers and people. In 2018, they recognised the need to strengthen their ability to adapt, improve, and lead in an increasingly uncertain future.d their people.
The Challenge
Signet faced two key challenges:
- The impact of packaging on the planet
- The organisation’s speed of change
The Approach
Signet brought together a cross-functional team to deeply understand their customers and align on where to improve.
“There’s a lot of value and insight we can get from customer journey mapping—we all need to become more customer centric.”
The team:
- Mapped key customer personas and journeys
- Conducted direct customer interviews (“customer safari”)
- Identified pain points and opportunities
- Defined a clear future state vision
This process was led internally, creating strong ownership and alignment from the outset.

From Insight to Execution
The journey mapping event created a powerful shift across the organisation.
“Getting all the key stakeholders together meant we were aligned from the start.”
By bringing stakeholders together:
- Alignment was built early
- Customer insights were deeply understood
- Opportunities were clearly identified and prioritised
With over 14 team members directly engaging with customers, the organisation developed a shared understanding of what mattered most—and where to focus.
From there, Signet:
- Consolidated insights
- Prioritised key opportunities
- Defined how to execute effectively
This led to the adoption of Agile and Scrum@Scale as a way of working—enabling faster learning, stronger alignment, and improved delivery across teams.
The Outcome
The results over the following years were significant:
- Market leadership in online retail packaging supply
- Transition to eco-friendly packaging solutions
- Launch of Packleo, a sustainability-focused business
- Growth exceeding market rates by 10x
- Strong improvements in execution and delivery
Whether you need support to accelerate progress or build internal capability, we tailor our approach to where you are and what you need.
